7 reasons working out together gets you better results

If you know me, you know it’s all about the science. Well, studies show that having a workout buddy turns out to be better than exercising alone. The data is clear...you'll work harder, stay more consistent, and get better results. Here’s why you should bring your partner to the gym…
1. You won't quit — and consistency is everything.
An Indiana University study found that married couples who joined a fitness program together had a dropout rate of just 6% over a year, compared to 43% for those who joined alone.
So what? Life is messy and can get in the way of staying consistent. Having a buddy along helps keep you on track. And maintaining that consistency is the biggest driver to improving body composition.
2. You'll finish what you start — and actually keep the results.
In a study published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, people who joined a weight loss program with friends completed it at a rate of 95% vs. 76% who went it alone.
So what? The stat that really stands out is… 66% of the buddy group maintained their weight loss at a 10-month follow-up, compared to just 24% who did it solo. A partner doesn't just help you lose weight, they help you keep it off.
3. You'll work out longer — which means more calories burned.
Research found that people exercising with a partner worked out more than twice as long as those going solo.
So what? More time moving means more calorie and fat burn…it's simple math. And the best part? Most people don't even notice they're doing it. A partner makes the time fly by.
4. You'll push harder — which means more muscle and a better metabolism.
Exercising alongside someone, subconsciously (and sometimes consciously) increases your intensity.
So what? Intensity means higher effort, driving greater muscle stimulus, thus building more muscle. More muscle means a higher metabolic rate and calorie burn at rest. If improving your metabolism is the goal, your workout partner might be one of your most underrated tools.
5. Healthy competition works in your favor.
Researchers call it the Köhler Effect. This phenomenon drives people to consistently outperform what they would normally do alone when paired with someone slightly more capable.
So what? Nobody wants to be the first one to quit. Having a buddy by your side means free motivation that translates directly into a harder, more effective workout.
6. Your social circle shapes your body composition.
This one is quite a surprising finding in the research. A national study of over 9,000 people found that simply spending more time with fitter people was directly linked to lower BMI and reduced obesity risk. What?!?!
So what? Who you spend time with, at the gym and beyond, has a measurable impact on your body composition. Surround yourself with people who prioritize their health and you'll prioritize yours. Choose your workout partner wisely.
7. Accountability is the strategy nobody talks about.
Every client who has ever struggled with weight loss has one thing in common. And it's not lack of knowledge…it's lack of follow-through.
So what? A workout buddy creates a level of accountability that no app, no program, and no good intention can replicate. When someone is counting on you to show up, you do it!
The bottom line? A workout partner is your scientifically-proven secret weapon for staying consistent, losing weight, building muscle, and making results stick.
At Infinitive, this is exactly why we offer programs, classes, and small group training where you’re not just working out next to someone, you're working out with them. And that difference is everything.
